Welcome to the Podcast Book Club

We're a Discord-based community of podcast fans and creators that spend our days sharing and enjoying audio fiction. Affectionately shorthanded to "the PBC", our work most often takes the form of various server projects that serve to encourage creativity and foster community online.

Projects

About Us

Podcast Book Club is, at heart, a community made up of podcast fans, creators, and all those that fall somewhere in-between. It was founded in the spring of 2023 following interest in a centralized space dedicated to enjoying podcasts together, and has since expanded to include adjacent projects like the Podcast Jam, Coffee Shop Chats and Audio Fiction Convention. The bookclub is primarily based within a Discord server, reaching global audiences in the audio drama and actual play spaces through a variety of community events and outreach. At any given time we're choosing or listening to an audio fiction podcast or two, coming together in Listening parties and text-based discussions to talk about various shows. The server and all associated projects are maintained by a small moderation team that is always looking for more staff members! If you're interested in joining the Bookclub staff, check out our Staff Information page, or reach out to [email protected] for more information.

Podcast Jam

The PBC’s Podcast Jam is a collaborative event running from early February to May for anyone interested in creating an audio drama, both prior creators and newcomers to podcasting. Inspired by game jam events, teams of writers, voice actors, editors and artists will collaborate to create the pilot episode of a fiction podcast from start to finish within one month. A week each is dedicated to planning, writing, recording and editing of the episodes. We know that, while the barrier of entry for podcasting is low, it can still be intimidating to jump into a show alone without any experience in the field. Thus, we hope this event will encourage new folks to try their hand at creating in a relatively low-stress, community-based environment, alongside giving current podcasters a fun change of pace from their ongoing shows. Though only a pilot will be created for the jam, participants are welcome and encouraged to continue their show beyond the event if so desired (we would love to have some new shows to keep up with!)

Participant Guidelines

Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question? Check here to see if it’s already answered! This will be updated as-needed throughout the event. What exactly is a “Podcast Jam”?
A podcast jam is an event in which participants are tasked with creating a pilot episode of an audio drama, with the added challenge of the episode done over the course of one month. If you’re familiar with game jams, this concept was modeled after that!
How do I sign up?
Sign-ups are done via the Participant form, which you can find here.
I want to join a team.
We can help with that! The help-wanted channel in the Discord was created specifically for this purpose; feel free to pitch a project, or find one already there that catches your interest. Once you’ve found a team, or if you already have an offsite group you wish to work with, have one member fill out the Team Submission form.
How much experience in writing/voice acting/editing do I need to take part?
None! We are open to all skill levels. If you’re new to podcasting, this event is a great way to test out the audio drama waters
How long does my podcast have to be?
Any length, but keep in mind it has to be completely written, recorded and edited during the duration of the Jam Month. (We recommend a runtime no longer than 15 minutes.)
I don’t know how to edit!
That’s okay! Audacity, a recording/editing software, is free, and has a resource manual you can access here.
What if I signed up to participate, but can’t complete my project by the deadline?
Fill out the Withdraw form before April 20th to drop from the event. Failure to submit a pilot at the end of the jam without prior notice via this form will result in being blacklisted from future PBC events.
If I have different roles on each team, can I participate in multiple projects?
No. Participants are restricted to working on one project for the jam. If you would like to participate in multiple roles, they all must be within one project.
What if I have a question that hasn’t been answered?
You’re welcome to post it in a Jam channel on the Discord and ping the mod-team, open a ticket, or email directly for assistance.

Participant Information

Participants are allowed to enter the jam as an individual, and handle all aspects of creating the pilot on their own, but we do heavily encourage folks to collaborate with a team! If you don’t already have teammates going into the event, we’ve set up the help-wanted channel, where participants can pitch their projects and find collaborators throughout the sign-up period. Teams are responsible for facilitating their own means of communication through the event, i.e. by creating a group DM with your teammates, though if you have trouble contacting someone who has already agreed to work on your project, please feel free to open a ticket in the server or send a message through the website contact form.If you’ve formed your own team, either prior to joining or via the help-wanted channels, please have one member of your team fill out and submit the Jam Team Submissions Form by March 30th. For participants who want to participate in a team but haven’t found a team/submitted the form, you will be randomly matched with a group. As soon as you establish your team, you’re welcome to start discussing project details and delegating the work, though we ask that nothing concrete – i.e., scriptwriting, voice acting and sound designing – begin until Team Announcements are officially posted on April 5th.After teams are announced, projects can begin working on their pilot! Planning the episode, writing the script, creating cover art, and everything except recording/editing! As this event is adapted from game jams, we wanted to introduce an element of challenge colloquial of those events. All planning and writing for the pilot will take place during the former half of the “Jam Month” while recording and editing for the pilot will take place during the latter half. The Jam Month is from April 7th to May 5th, with episode submissions due at the end of the day on May 5th. At the end of the month, everyone’s pilots will be posted to the Jam feed, with a closing ceremony event & listening party marathon the following weekend.

General Guidelines

  • Pilots created as part of the event must be new, not previously published work on any podcasting site.

  • Any writing, recording or editing for your pilot must be completed between April 7th and May 5th, during the Jam period.

  • Scripts can be any length, but we recommend no longer than 10-15 minutes due to the time constraints.

  • Any and all themes are allowed, within reason (there is a difference between a racist podcast and a podcast that tackles racism, for example)

  • Participants are restricted to creating one pilot for this event. Additionally, participants may only join as a member of one team, though they may participate in as many roles on that project as desired.

Team Guidelines

  • If utilizing the help-wanted channels to create a team, please ensure your DMs are open so potential collaborators can get in touch with you. (If you wish to only turn on DMs from members for this server: Right-click the PBC icon in the left sidebar > Select “Privacy Settings” > Toggle on the “Direct Messages” feature in the pop-up box)

  • Be in regular contact with your teammates throughout the duration of the jam. This is a team-focused event, & it’s important to be collaborative and meet the expectations set for your part in the project.

  • You may participate in as many roles as you’d like on a team, but please keep your own limits in mind & avoid overcommitting!

  • If you commit to collaborating on a project, you must deliver unless your teammates also agree to drop your project before the April 20th deadline. Failure to finish your pilot by the episode submission deadline, without prior notice given to the jam moderators via the withdraw form, will result in being reviewed for future PBC events.

  • When withdrawing during the Jam Month, ensure that your team has all necessary information and resources to complete the project without you. For any questions, feel free to reach out and open a ticket. Withdrawing from PodJam before the withdraw deadline will have no consequences.

  • All members of a team must be signed up to the jam as a participant prior to the March 23rd deadline. While teams are more than welcome to put out public casting calls on social media, deadlines need to be prior to the 23rd so accepted cast/crew can be approved to join the event. (This includes minor one-off voice lines/background roles, etc. We recommend utilizing your existing team as much as possible, and if your show requires a variety of extras, potentially having one VA responsible for most/every minor role.)

  • If you plan to source voice actors via the help-wanted channels, we ask that you allow for any voice type when pitching your request.

Member Resource & FAQ

Welcome to the Bookclub! Due to the scope of our work, we know the server can be slightly overwhelming for newcomers (and longtime members!), so we hope this documentation will be useful to reference during your time here as a member!

Defining what the bookclub is and what we do here has become a far more complicated answer over time. Fundamentally, we're a space to discuss podcasting, but we're also an event host, a recommendation list, a community, and countless other titles. Creating and maintaining a centralized location for any and all things audio drama and actual play has also led to our founding a variety of projects, most notably events like AuFiCon, the Podcast Jam, PodCamp, and Coffee Shop Chats.

By joining the server, you’re establishing yourself as part of the community we’ve built, even if that means you only hop in every few weeks to like a handful of messages! However, the “main” event, and the heart of the bookclub, is the server shows we collectively spend some time listening to and discussing in dedicated channels. Engaging in conversations, joining listening parties and making fanart and embracing the community that audio drama offers is the most colloquial way to spend your time here.

Beyond typical member engagement, the server’s Moderation team is structured to provide more opportunities for “everyday” listeners to get involved with the behind-the-scenes of the bookclub via the Staff team! You can find detailed information here, but essentially Staff members are only responsible for hosting shows & running listening parties, and, as such, is a small step up from typical membership. If simply listening to shows isn’t enough, you should consider joining the team to run some shows of your own.

Additionally, financial support is always incredibly valuable. We don’t make money off of the server, it all goes to help fund various projects and hosting fees associated with running the bookclub! You can find more information, as well as donate, here.

We currently host two audio dramas and one actual play at a time. Actual Plays and Listener’s Picks are voted on by the members, and Editor’s Picks are shows selected by the mod team.

After polls for new shows close, the show mods in charge of a show determine a run period depending on the current length of the podcast, allowing members to set their own listening schedule within the timeframe. Specific information about each show, including the expected end date and show moderators, can be found in the info channels in each podcast’s category in the server.

Beyond bookclub shows, we encourage people to discuss and share other shows they’re listening to, with a “Listening Party” pingable role to encourage conversation for “non-server” shows. The pingable roles, both for server shows and otherwise, work by utilizing a tag through Carlbot – if you have a pingable role yourself, a tag is used to ping the role in order to minimize spam.

The role-exclusive pings are as follows:

!lparty – pings the Listening Party role

! – pings the member show role. These are updated for each server show, check the info channels for the current shows to find the tag.

!mod – pings the mod role for the given show. Check the info channels for the current shows to find the tag.
